ArchSmarter helps architects and designers work smarter, not harder with time-saving tools and targeted training that increases effectiveness and maximizes efficiency.
Let’s face it, project schedules are getting shorter and shorter. Building types are getting more complex. The number of pages in the code books are growing exponentially. It’s not enough to just work harder. There are only so many hours in the day. We have to start working smarter. We have to master our tools to stay competitive in the marketplace. We have to master our processes to produce better, more sustainable buildings.
My name is Michael Kilkelly. I founded ArchSmarter in 2014 as a way to help other architects work smarter, not harder. In addition to this site, I also run my own design firm, Space Command. I’m a native New Englander. I live and work in Middletown, CT. Prior to starting Space Command and ArchSmarter, I was an Associate at Gehry Partners in sunny Los Angeles. I also worked for a number of design firms in the Boston area. I received my B.Arch from Norwich University and an SMArchS from MIT.
Hey Michael , i´m an young engineer in geodasy. I would like to face some new techniques to take myself to a new level.
So i started to deal with BIM using software as Revit and with the help of you Dynamo.
My latest question is:
I would like to place cover stones of a platform automatically along the railway track. For this i would like to use a fixed distance between the line and cover stones. Like if a company gives me a complete model of the rails and i’m supposed to complete the project by adding more textures and elements. Until now, i can fix the stones but it is always manual and that costs me a lot of stupid time. Therefore i need a solution, to generate the coverstones of the platform along the railways with an distance x automatically.
Maybe you have a course by this topic or a similar one.
So i hope you understand my issue despite my school English.
Thank you a lot and best regards
Max
Max, are the cover stones already a Revit family? Are they regularly spaced or do you need to vary the spacing?
Hey Michael, thanks for your reply. The stones are already given in Revit as a family. We put them by hand along the track. The distance of the stones to the track are given by guidelines.
Now I would like to set it automatically. As given is the existing track and the fixed distance of the stones with respect to the track.
Hi Michael,
Looking over your Power-Pack for Revit add-in and wondering about the commercial use of these tools. How do I go about purchasing this for multiple users?
Many thanks and best regards,
Chris.
Chris,
Power-Pack is available on a pay-what-you-want basis. You determine the price and can install it for as many users as you like. Here’s the link:

I imagine you have quite a following given all you’ve done for the industry, Michael. I am trying to help a friend who finds faculty for continuing education at RISD to locate instructors able to teach a 1x/week evening course in Revit and another in AutoCAD, but focused on interior design students, not architecture students. If you can recommend anyone who’s taught either in that context and is looking for a part-time opportunity that would not interfere with other day job pursuits, please feel free to send them my way.
Hi Michael,
I was wondering if you could help me with a question about wall schedules. I am trying to create a wall schedule that populates the wall types/wall assembly are used while designing a building in Revit. I have created a schedule to show the type mark, the fire rating, comments, and description to appear in the schedule. I really would like to have an image or revit component of the wall structure/assembly show up in the schedule. I did add an image/photo fields in the schedule properties and linked in a photo copy of the wall assembly but when the sheet is printed out the image of the wall assembly is not clear, not to scale and basically looks like crap. Is there a way to had the wall component that is created by revit to the wall schedule so you see the layers of the wall – masonry, plywood, air space, wood stud?
I hope this makes sense or you have an idea of what I’m asking
